Volcanoes and turtles on Fernandina Island
Fernandina is the youngest of the Galapagos Islands, and in fact is still volcanically active today! This, and the fact that it's one of the furthest islands from the airports of Baltra and San Cristobal, means that many cruises don't visit Fernandina, which in turn means that you may well get this stunning island all to yourself!
All this recent volcanic activity means that Fernandina has little variety in the way of plant-life, although there are large mangrove forests on the island. Despite the shortage of vegetation, however, there is plenty of wildlife, most of which gets its sustenance from the sea. As well as penguins, sea-lions and the large marine iguana population of Punta Espinoza, Fernandina is one of the best places to see the unique flightless cormorants of the Galapagos, as they run and dive into the cool waters in search of fish.

As well as the wildlife, one of the main reasons to visit Fernandina is to trek up to the lip of the crater and gaze down into the caldera, nearly 1000m below - don't worry, we get plenty of warning as to likely volcanic activity so there's no danger of you having to run for it!
