The Devil's Nose train ride is a favourite part of many Ecuador holidays, but a combination of disrepair and El Niño has meant that it is currently the only functioning part of what was once a large and thriving railway network running throughout Ecuador. Moves are underway, however, to rehabilitate a southern portion of that network in the province of Cañar.
As part of a wide-ranging project to link together some of the main tourist sites in the area near Cuenca, the Ecuadorean government is to renovate 5km of the railway track between the town of Tambo and the famous archaeological site of Incapirca. This route will allow passengers to visit Ingapirca and the delights of colonial Tambo in style, it is hoped that eventually the railway line will run all the way south to Cuenca, which would be a stunning addition to any stay there. The first stage, however, should be open as early as July. More on this as we get it!
