JUNGLE ADVENTURE AT THE KAPAWI LODGE

Kapawi Lodge, Ecuador

The Kapawi Lodge project was begun in 1993 with the aim of not only providing a top-class Amazon experience for tourists, but also providing a sustainable means of economic support for the Achuar indigenous community of the area so that they would be better able to withstand the encroaching pressures of oil exploration and better sustain their ancestral culture. At the moment 70% of the organisation's employees are Achuars and a programme is currently underway to totally transfer ownership to the FINAE (Federation of Achuar Indigenous People in Ecuador) by 2011.

Apart from its impeccable sustainable tourism credentials, Kapawi Lodge is notable for offering some of the most flexible jungle programmes in Ecuador. You decide your itinerary yourself in conjunction with one of the lodge's expert naturalist guides according to seasonal conditions, your preferences, and the presence of wildlife in the area. You can take canoe-rides along the streams and rivers, go for a variety of day and night hikes in the rainforest, and stay with local Achuar communities to experience how they live together with the jungle - definitely the Real Ecuador!

Sample Itinerary

Ecuador Amazon jungle Day One - Into the jungle

After breakfast this morning, we will pick you up and take you back to the airport for a flight across the Andes and down into the Amazon basin to the town of Shell. Here we will board a light aircraft which will carry us for the short 'hop' across miles and miles of pristine rainforest to the Kapawi airstrip. Here we will complete our journey with a 30-minute canoe trip along the Pastaza and Capahuari rivers to the Kapawi Private Reserve.

Ecuador Amazon rainforest Days Two and Three - Design your own jungle itinerary

The really great thing about the Kapawi Lodge is that you get to sit down with an expert indigenous guide and plan your own itinerary for your stay. The area around the lodge offers a variety of terrains, wildlife and activities which is truly astonishing, and you can see it all at your own pace.

Days can begin as early as 6am for those who want to catch the early-rising birds and animals. A favourite trip is a canoe-ride out to a nearby clay lick, where you can watch parrots and macaws gather for their breakfasts, before you head back to the lodge for a hearty breakfast of your own!. After this, the day's main activities will begin and you can choose from a variety of walks, boat trips, rafting expeditions and full-on jungle treks. Depending on the activities, you will then return to the lodge for lunch and/or dinner, before the guides hold a briefing session for the next day's activities. For those who are keen, there will also be optional night excursions into the rainforest to catch those animals that only come out at night...

Quito Day Four - Back to Quito

After our final jungle breakfast this morning, we will pick you up and take you back downriver to the airstrip for the flight to Shell and then back up to Quito. On arrival, we’ll take you back to your hotel so you can get ready to head out and continue your holiday in Ecuador.
